Dear Explorer,
Hong
Kong is one of the world’s most fascinating cities….a
spectacular harbour, busy streets, bargaining vendors, fantastic
architecture, active people….and Hong Kong is so much
more.
Few
visitors have discovered that, in contrast to all of the clamour
that gives the city its buzz, the HKSAR* offers some of the
most tranquil, superb walking opportunities you will find
in Asia….or anywhere.
Of
the 1,096 square km that constitutes Hong Kong, 40% is designated
national park land. Rolling hills, ocean as far as the eye
can see, lush vegetation, interesting villages and nooks and
crannies, all this amazes and delights those who discover
the natural splendours of this truly glorious “barren
rock”*.
As
two regular walking partners, we have tramped many of the
hills and walks here. In early 2003, when we were traversing
stretches of the Maclehose Trail*, we were exclaiming that
the rural areas of Hong Kong are so gorgeous that it was a
pity that so many visitors did not get to experience these
parts. And, after many similar conversations, Hiking Hong
Kong was born.
We
hope, as you look through the information on this website,
your interest will be sparked, your feet will start itching,
and you’ll decide to join us in exploring a little-discovered
corner of this stunning part of the world.
Your
walking hosts,
Elaine Pickering and Paul Boldy

Hong
Kong’s colonial legacy began in 1841 when Captain
Charles Elliot, Royal Navy, took possession of
an island in the South China Sea that Lord Palmerston,
Queen Victoria’s Foreign Secretary, scathingly described
as a “Barren Rock”. |

The
Maclehose Trail is a 100 km trail in the New Territories.
It is made up of 10 sections, crosses through 8 country
parks and climbs over about 20 hills. Each year the annual
charity event “Trailwalker” is organised to
raise money for Oxfam. Teams are to walk the trail in
less than 48 hours. Paul participates in this event. For
